The trumpet, more than any other instrument, has undergone an immense expansion of its playing
technique and tonal range in the last 50 years. While most instruments developed their tonal
profiles with the music of the 18th and 19th centuries, the music of the 20th century is
inextricably linked to the development of the trumpet. Numerous composers of very different
backgrounds and styles have composed for this instrument and their collaboration with performers
has enriched its aesthetic and sonic possibilities.
Conceived and created by William Forman, TOTALLY-TRUMPET is a
three-day festival that brings together the joyous experimentation and expression of new music
with the highest standards of classical performance.
Three Prime Time Concerts and two
Late Night Concerts with works by some 30 composers
from 11 countries provide a unique concentration of the wealth of new trumpet music at the
highest artistic level. The concerts, including several world premieres, present a completely
diverse look at avant-garde composition for trumpet. They include cutting edge performance practice,
the latest technical and sound developments as well as aspects of improvisation and innovative
jazz composition.
The main focus of the festival is to present new music as a living artistic expression of our time,
promoting communication between musicians and audience, as well as among performers themselves.
The concerts will be complemented by a workshop for young music students and amateur musicians
in Berlin. Through their own performances, the participants, joined by festival performers, will be
introduced to the works and the aestethics of new music. Another workshop, for young composers, will
facilitate communication between them and performers.
